trustobeyWhat a beautiful song is “Trust and Obey”! Often sung as an invitation to lost souls, the words express a gentle nudging by the singers to the one who needs to respond. We tell that one “just step out and make it right. It’s a big commitment but you can do it; it’s worth it! Just trust and obey!”

Too often, however, the one who needs to respond will just grip the pew and wait it out. He will delay and ignore until the song is ended and he can go back to living the way he wants, despite the undeniable prickling in his conscience.

In other words, while we’re singing “trust and obey” what are you, the one who needs to respond, saying?

You’re saying “oh hey…”

You’re getting distracted by some shiny new temptation. The devil is smart and should never be underestimated. He has no problem telling you how important it is to “go to church” on a semi-regular basis. “Go ahead!” he’ll say. “Enjoy the fellowship and the singing and how good it makes you feel!” He doesn’t care, so long as he gets to have just a little control over you, that’s all he needs. He’ll let you listen to the sermon telling you that you need to repent and turn to God. He’ll let you listen to the song that encourages you to trust God and obey Him, and then he’ll put the little thought in your head: He’ll remind you of some sin you’d have to give up in order to be faithful to God.

The devil will distract you with a brand new toy, and like an excited puppy, people will fall for it hook-line-and sinker. Preachers will visit people and ask them about their soul, and they’ll hear some variation of the same excuse: “I know I need to do______, but I just started doing __________.”

or

“If I turn to Christ that means I’ll have to ________”

or ”

I’m really big into _________ and making a big religious commitment is just not feasible.”

I’ll leave those blank so you can fill in your own personal goals, hobbies, responsibilities or future plans. Everybody has them, and they’re different for everyone.

And the devil knows exactly what they are and he will use them like hooks in a fish’s mouth. When you get too close to stepping out into the aisle and making your way down front, he will dangle a sparkly new lure in front of you, distracting you long enough for him to snap that hook back and reel you back in.

Don’t say “oh hey…look over there!” and miss the invitation of God. Trust and Obey Him and He will save your soul.

think about it,
have a great day!
