what is loveHow do I know I’m a Christian?

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

1 John 3:14

According to John, we know are because we love.

That’s not to say that love is all it takes to be a Christian. Instead, his point is “If I don’t love, then I know I’m not a child of God.”

Do you love me? I am not perfect. I make mistakes. I am forgetful and clumsy and sometimes small and petty, and yes I sometimes forget how to love. But I need you to love me.

I love you. Even though you annoy me sometimes, because I know I annoy you sometimes. But I love you, and that’s how – in that small way – I know I am a Christian.

Listen to Christ…

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

John 13:35

How does everyone else know we are saved? Answer: Because we love each other. We love outwardly, we show it. It’s written on our faces. You see it on the hugs we give each other when we cry at a funeral; you see it on the laughter we share in the foyer after we worship; you see in our Christmas cards, facebook likes, and fellowship meal desserts.

Anger, bitterness, frustration, a sourpuss attitude, constant complaining…those negative feelings are infectious. You do it, and it brings me down, and I go away complaining about you. Now I’m complaining, you’re complaining. Everyone’s complaining!

Love is also infectious.

What is love? It’s the way I know that I’m God’s child. It’s the way you know I’m God’s child. It’s this feeling in the air that, if you catch it, you don’t want it to go away.

I love you; do you love me?

Have a great day!
