Speaking of false teachers who lead Christians astray, Peter says this…

These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

2 Peter 2:17-20

I love the opening illustration: They are wells without water. People thirst for knowledge and these false teachers promise wells filled with what is needed, but they are liars. They have nothing of value. They talk and talk and what they say sounds good until you stop and actually try and make sense of it. When you do, you realize it is all empty (vanity). They promise the freedom to live however you want, to do whatever you want, but really they will only bring you into bondage to the Devil.

Keep in mind that Peter is speaking to brethren in Christ. Notice how he writes to those who had escaped the pollutions of the world through Christ. But false teachers don’t leave you alone when you become a Christian. In fact, that’s when Satan takes an active interest in you. Why not? Before, you were on his side; now you belong to God so of course he’s going to try and win you back.

What does he want to do? He wants to entangle you again with the tentacles of the world. He wants to wrap you up, tie you down and entangle you in sinfulness, re-condemning your once-saved soul.

Will you let him?
