question-marksIt  is not often that God asks a question. In fact you can read page after page in any of the sixty six books of the Bible and scarcely will you find the Almighty pause to wonder aloud or inquire for some information. Of course, the all-knowing nature of God means He has little reason ever to ask. That’s why, when you do stumble upon a question it’s not asked for God’s benefit, but man’s. God always knows the answer in advance; but sometimes He teaches us by questioning us.

This week let’s consider five examples of God (or Christ) asking a question.

Today we go back to the beginning. God had made Adam and Eve and provided them with a beautiful garden to tend and keep. There in Paradise man and woman had everything they could need. The icing on the cake was a relationship with God where they could walk side-by-side with Him. Of course we know what happened next: Sin happened, and the holy relationship man enjoyed with God was shattered.

Shamed by their sin, Adam and Eve covered themselves in fig leaves and hid from the presence of God. When God came looking for them–and we could easily have an entirely separate discussion about how incredible THAT is–He asked a question to which He certainly knew the answer.

And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

Genesis 3:9

So why ask the question?

Because He wanted Adam and Eve to answer it.

He wanted them to stop and assess their location relative to God:

adam eve and GodWhere am I?
I am hiding.

Why?
Because I am ashamed.

Why?
Because I sinned.

So?
My sin separates me from God.

And there it is.

We might think it a wonderful prospect to Have the Maker and Master of the Universe ask us a question, but I guarantee you, you don’t want Him asking “Where are you?”

If it’s not obvious where you are, and He has to ask to make you realize it, you’re probably not in a good place.

So…where are you?

Think about it,
Have a great day!
