There’s a difference between being tempted and being tested, though sometimes that fact is forgotten.

We must never think, when trials come our way that God is tempting us to sin, or daring us to disobey. On the contrary, it is Satan who seeks transgression; God wants us to be faithful and obedient.

Sometimes the commands of God butt heads with our own selfish desires. When that happens, our faith in God is put to the test. This happened to Abraham when his love for his son was tested against his love for God, (who told him to offer Isaac on an altar). God was not tempting Abraham to sin, He was merely giving a command. God expects us to love and obey Him, and to put His will above our own, no matter how much it hurts.

It can be a test, but it’s never a temptation from God.

Satan, however, will tempt us to disobey God. He will distract us with worldly affections and pleasures and try to lead us astray.

It is possible both to be tempted and tested at the same time, but they do not come from the same source. God tests; Satan tempts.

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

James 1:13-15
