If you think the Lord’s Last Supper was just Him passing around some bread and grape juice you need to go back and look at the text. Entire pages are devoted to this event, with numerous lessons to learn.

Jesus spoke of service…

And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.

Luke 22:25-27

Pagan kings liked to abuse their power and show how powerful they were to their citizens. They were motivated by insecurity, jealousy and ambition. Jesus encourages His Ambassadors not to do likewise. Instead the one willing to humbly serve should be the leader.

Jesus spoke of the sorrow that sin brings…

The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.
Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

Matthew 26:24-25

To hear the Creator of men’s souls say “It would have been better for you if you were never born” has to rank among the most poignant statements ever made. And yet those are Jesus’ words. He says them knowing what the end-result of Judas’ life would be. He says it likewise of every soul that leaves this world with sin staining his soul. The Savior is ready to save, but how sad is it when a person refuses!

Jesus spoke of love, true love…

This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

John 15:12-13

A lot of people will throw the word around very casually, but God is love (1 John 4:8); therefore He ought to be the One to set the parameters of what constitutes true love. Jesus says that love involves sacrifice. A love that isn’t willing to pay the ultimate price fails to live up to the word.

Jesus spoke of a long-lasting relationship…

Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

Mark 14:25

The best lesson to take away from the Lord’s Last Supper is that it really wasn’t His last supper. Every time Christians assemble, on the first day of the week according to the New Testament pattern, we partake of the emblems He took 2,000+ years ago. And when we do, He takes them with us, being a part of us (as we are a part of His body, the kingdom church). That makes the Lord’s Supper more than just a reminder of His death; when we take it we are Communing with His living self.

What a wonderful blessing we have, to enjoy the Lord’s  Supper. We’ll be taking Communion this Sunday as we do every first day of the week.

Why not join us!?

until then,
have a great day!
