All of us have a God-given longing for something greater than ourselves. It is a trait unique to people; animals may go off hunting and exploring but they work on instinct. With people, we have this conscience desire to know what is beyond the horizon. We know we have it yet we can not ignore it. It is what motivated men in history to explore continents on foot, sail the oceans in ships and later to traverse the stars by rocket. We have this innate need to “know.”

The thing of it is, no matter how much of this physical world (or universe) we discover, that thirst to explore does not go away. It never will go away. And while atheistic scientists love that, they miss the point of it. They will never be content because the limits to their exploration are the elements of this present, physical existence.

God is above and beyond our physical existence. He exists in a spiritual realm and that desire in us to seek for the greater things was put there by God in order to keep us searching. We do ourselves a disservice if we only search out for what is around us. We should not expect to find the answers by searching for the next star in the sky; our aim should be for MAKER of the stars. But since God can not be “traveled to” the way Columbus traveled to the new world, or the way Armstrong traveled to the moon, how can we possibly fulfill that longing within us?

Through Christ.

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Philippians 4:11-13

Through the salvation which He offers we can find contentment and peace. We can satisfy that sense of longing within us. Sure we can be curious about the stars of the heavens, but that’s all they are: a curiosity. Our “need to know” the answer to life’s questions begins and ends with God.

That’s the context of Philippians 4:13.

It’s not about winning ballgames or climbing literal mountains; it’s about recognizing you are where you are, that it’s okay if things aren’t going great, and that in the end God is in control so just trust Him. Because through Him you’ll accomplish what He wants you to accomplish.
