In ancient battles it was common for the vanguard (the front line) to have someone holding the flag bearing the colors and crest of that army. Especially in the days of medieval warfare, where a king was a ruler over several regions that he conquered and each region had its own culture and identity and colors (flag), you might have a dozen different flags waving around a battlefield. Oftentimes those colors or symbols had great significance and history behind them.

Since the army you were fighting was a bunch of silver-clad knights and you and your fellow fighters were likewise a bunch of silver-clad knights, it could get confusing. The flags were a good way to quickly identify who was on what side. The colors and crests weren’t just waved on flags, they were worn on tabards (like a sleeveless shirt over the breastplate) and they were painted on shields.

You couldn’t go two feet without seeing the colors of someone’s lord whom they swore allegiance to.

So I can’t help but wonder, when we’re out on the battlefield of the soul – the world — and when we’re suddenly surrounded by out enemy, outnumbered and outmatched with hope seeming to be lost…what would the colors of Jesus’ flag look like? He is the commander of our army. He is the Lord we swear allegiance to. When we’re in the thick of battle, it’s the colors of His flag we should rally around to find victory over our enemy.

So what does Jesus’ flag look like? If I were designing it, it’d look like this…

RED is for the color of the blood that Jesus shed
BROWN is for the crown of thorns they placed upon his head
PURPLE is for the royalty that in Him did dwell
WHITE is for the purity that saves a soul from Hell

His symbolic colors, which emphasize his submission, sacrifice and Divine sovereignty are emblazoned by a cross of pure white, representing the sinlessness He he had and which he offers to us.

When you’re on the battlefield, fighting–not with swords but with words—and when you’re surrounded by enemies and when hope seems lost, look around: Find the Christian battleflag: Embrace His sacrifice, embody His submission… And run to his saving sovereignty!
