boysFor many parents, today was the day our children returned to school. For Lauren and me, it was our fourth time to say goodbye to Jack, and our third time (counting pre-K) saying goodbye to Caleb. Though we’ve done it plenty of times now, it still brings a sinking feeling in our stomachs.

We have to turn loose of our children, handing them over to (at best) acquaintances that we hope will teach them well. We also hope that our children will behave well enough to be taught. But that’s a different story.

Whether you are a parent in our shoes, a parent looking back on those days, a parent looking forward to them, or not a parent at all: Say a prayer for those of us who send our children away for a few hours every day.

Pray that they are safe, pray that they are studious, pray that they are cared for, and pray that we–parents everywhere–do our part to educate them ourselves when they get home.
