In speaking of marriage, Jesus made an interesting statement…

But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Mark 10:6-9

Now that’s nothing that hasn’t been considered a dozen times, but did you ever notice how Jesus starts with the concept of creation? First God made male and female, Jesus says. God made man and then made woman from man. Then Jesus comments on marriage and how what God has joined together is no longer two but one flesh.

It seems like the Lord is putting emphasis in a place we don’t always think of. According to Jesus, marriage mimics God’s original creation of only one person. And only by His power did the one become two (man and woman). And only by His design did the two become one again (man and wife).

Marriage isn’t two separate people living together, having kids and sharing a bank account. Marriage is two people who give themselves to the other, mutually and totally, so that “they two” become “they one.”
