Every now and then someone will come to my door and invite me to come visit “their” church. Well what is “your” church, I always wonder.

There are a lot of “churches” out there and they all teach sometimes drastically different doctrines. So I wonder, is “my” church “your” church?

Is your church the Presbyterian church? It began as the the church which best consolidates the teachings of John Calvin. Calvin had a protege named John Knox who took what he learned from Calvin to Ireland and established the Presbyterian movement in that country. Immigrants to America brought the religion here and soon it was one of the most popular denominational groups (as a branch off of the Anglican church), from which many other denominations sprang. Their doctrine is derived from a so-called “Book of Confessions” which explains what they believe and why.

Is that “your” church? It may be; many people are Presbyterian and are quite fond of their church.

But it’s not “my” church.

I belong to a church that uses the Bible only as its creed book and doctrinal guide. What I believe I believe because the Bible tells me so. It is the only book needed to be rightly divided and fully studied in order to know how to live and worship God appropriately. It is not a doctrine crafted by John Calvin, John Knox or any other man. It was crafted by the Holy Spirit Himself, who inspired the 40 writers who complied the Holy Book. I follow the Bible only, because the Bible only, makes Christians only, and the only Christians.

That’s “my” church (though technically it belongs to Christ–Matthew 16:18).

Is it “your” church?
